1.Rice Research Institute
The Rice Research Institute is mainly engaged in the research on rice germplasm resources, variety breeding, biotechnology, tillage & cultivation, physiology and ecology. At present, the Institute has established the National Germplasm Guangzhou Wild Rice Nursery and Guangdong Rice Germplasm Resources Bank, which preserve nearly 19,000 cultivated varieties and more than 5,000 accessions of wild rice germplasm. Therefore, the Institute is one of the units preserving the most rice germplasm resources in China. The annual coverage rate of the varieties developed by the Institute occupies about 50% of the total rice planting area in Guangdong Province, and the transfer ratio of research achievements of the Institute is up to 90%.
The Fruit Tree Research Institute (FTRI) is dedicated to research that aims to sustain the fruit industry in Guangdong province. Priorities of FTRI's activities have been given to conservation of tropical and subtropical fruit germplasms, development of new cultivars, and improvement of growing techniques. Other research fields include fruit tree genetics, biotechnology, pre-and post-harvest physiology, and pest management. With decades' effort, FTRI has collected nearly 3000 fruit tree germpalsm materials, leading to the establishment of three national clonal repositories, the national litchi germplasm repository, the national banana germplasm repository and the national wampee germplasm repository in the institute.
The Vegetable Research Institute devotes to the researches mainly including collection, identification, evaluation and innovation of germplasm resources, techniques of vegetable breeding, cultivation and seed production, and associated biological techniques. Up to now more than 90 vegetable varieties bred by the institute were approved for release by the National Crop Variety Approval Committee or Guangdong Crop Variety Approval Committee, and 2 independently developed techniques were selected as strongly promoted techniques in Guangdong Province.The institute focuses on heterosis, resistance of disease and stress, cell engineering and molecular marker assisted breeding of characteristic vegetables in South China. It holds domestic leading position in such researches as gynoecious, disease- and stress-resistance in South China characteristic cucurbitaceae vegetables, bacterial wilt resistance in solanaceae vegetables, the heterosis in leaf vegetables, genetic map construction and molecular biology in characteristic vegetable of South China. The institute has developed a serial of techniques such as vegetable nutrient comprehensive and highly efficient management, industrial growing and grafting seedlings, highly efficient water and fertilizer synchronized regulation and management, annual cultivation of edible fungi. A highly efficient vegetable cultivation system has been successfully constructed in Southern China ecological region.
The Crops Research Institute is mainly engaged in the collection, evaluation and utilization of such crop germplasm resources as corn, peanut, tuber crop(sweet potato and potato), tobacco, sugarcane, southern herb, and Food legumes, new variety breeding, as well as corresponding cultivation techniques and biotechnologies. At present, the Institute has established the National Germplasm Guangzhou Sweet Potato Nursery, National Center of Oilseed Crops Improvement South China Peanut Sub-Center, National South Sweet Corn Germplasm Reproduction Base, Modern 'Resistance and Energy Type' Dryland Crops Demonstration Base, MOA Guangdong Research Station of Crop Gene Resource & Germplasm Enhancement, MOA Scientific Observing and Experimental Station of Peanut & Edible Corn in South China, Key Laboratory of Crops Genetics & Improvement of Guangdong Province, and Guangdong Provincial Dryland Crop Germplasm Resources Database(Nursery). In addition, the Institute has successfully bred 138 new crop varieties with a total extension area of 287 million mu, and made 128 achievements.
5.The Plant Protection Research Institute
The Plant Protection Research Institute is mainly engaged in the technical research on early forecasting and management of crop diseases, pests, weeds, rats and invasive alien species, the research and development of low-risk new pesticides, the collection, appraisal and innovative utilization of disease-resistant germplasm resources and the natural enemy resources of pests, biological activity assessment of pesticides, and field effect evaluation and risk assessment. At present, the institute has established the MOA Guangzhou Scientific Observation Station of Crop Pests, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of High Technology For Plant Protection, and the Guangdong Technological Research and Development Center for Pollution-free Vegetables. In addition, the institute has built and widely applied a technical system for the prevention and control of ASEAN agricultural invasive pest.
6.Animal Science Institute
Established in 1952, Animal Science Institute mainly focuses on research and development of animal genetics and breeding, animal nutrition and feed science, aquaculture science, animal pharmacology and herbivorous animal and grassland. Research creative platforms have been set up, including State Key Laboratory of Livestock and Poultry Breeding, Key Laboratory of Poultry Genetics and Breeding, Ministry of Agriculture, Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science in South China, Ministry of Agriculture, Guangdong Open Laboratory of Animal Breeding and Nutrition, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Animal Breeding and Nutrition and so on.
7.The Sericultural and Agri-Food Research Institute
The Sericultural and Agri-Food Research Institute is mainly engaged in research on the stepped processing of bulk agricultural products, efficient utilization of agricultural resources, functional foods, food safety, the breeding of new silkworm varieties, efficient planting, and disease control and prevention technology. It boasts one key laboratory cultivation base for agricultural products processing, jointly established by the Guangdong Province and the Ministry of Science and Technology, Key Laboratory of Functional Foods, National Functional Laboratory of Sericulture Technology System, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Agricultural Products Processing, and the Guangdong Open Laboratory of Agricultural Products Processing.
The Institute is a comprehensive research institution with a focus on agricultural resources and environment in Guangdong province. As an agricultural resources and environmental science research center, the institute targets at serving the plant nutrition, farmland conservation, new fertilizer production, agricultural resource utilization, agricultural pollution detection and prevention. It has established the Key Laboratory of Plant Nutrition and Fertilizer in South Region, Ministry of Agriculture, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Nutrient Cycling and Farmland Conservation, Guangdong Engineering Research Center of New Fertilizer and Effective Fertilization, Guangdong Engineering Research Center of Agricultural Waste Utilization, and Guangzhou Research Center of Wastes to Resources.
9.Agricultural Economics and Rural Development Institute
The institute is mainly engaged in research on agricultural economy, regional economy, agricultural information, agricultural media and rural development, etc. It has built Provincial Decision & Consulting Research Base, Guangzhou Key Laboratory of Agricultural Economy and Circulation, National Demonstration Base for IT Application in Agriculture. It possesses the qualification of national Grade A engineering consultation and agricultural S&T novelty search. The institute has established a public service platform for modern agriculture industrial circulation and transformation of agricultural S&T achievements; edited and published Guangdong Agricultural Sciences, Guangdong Animal husbandry and veterinary science and technology, Guangdong rural practical technology.
10.Animal Health Institute
The institute is mainly engaged in R&D, application and promotion of pathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention & control technology and veterinary vaccines and drugs for swine diseases, poultry diseases, aquatic diseases, zoonosis and parasitic disease. It established the Guangdong Science-observation Experiment Station of Veterinary Drugs and Veterinary Biological Technology, Ministry of Agriculture, Guangdong Open Laboratory of Veterinary Public Health, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Livestock Disease Prevention, South China Animal Disease Germplasm Resource Center, and the Guangzhou Engineering Research Center for Animal Disease Diagnosis Industry.
The Demonstration Base mainly carries out research on key technology of agricultural production in Southern China, integrated innovation of new crops varieties, technology and products, experiment and demonstration as well as extension services, especially focuses on key technology of facility agricultural production and demonstration, extension. In the meanwhile, it takes charge of management of the Guangzhou National Agricultural S&T Park, National Agricultural S&T Innovation and Integrated Demonstration Base, Provincial Agricultural Modern S&T Demonstration Area and Baiyun Base, Dafeng Base in Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Besides, it also undertakes the mission of public administration and services, science popularization, industrial cognition and practice for university students.On account of high-temperature and rainy, typhoon weather in South China, the demonstration base has developed a key technology of Crops High Industrial Effective and Safety Production Modes in South China. It combines modern agricultural machinery technology, biotechnology, information technology, environmental control technology (soilless culture included) and other key technology for crops industrialization, which enables crops production getting rid of or reducing dependence on natural environment, so as to realize all-year production, ensure high-stable yield, qualified and safe products. This technology has been demonstrated and extended in southern China and generated good social and economical benefits.
The institute is engaged in research on flower germplasm resource preservation, innovation and utilization, the breeding of new varieties, cultivation, urban and rural landscape planning and design, etc. It has established the Orchid R&D and Promotion Center of National Engineering Research Center for Floriculture, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Ornamental Plant Germplasm Innovation, and the Utilization and Guangdong Ornamental Plant Germplasm Resources Bank. It breeds a great number of flower varieties, among which, 31 cultivars are released by Guangdong Crop Variety Approval Committee, 70 new orchid hybrids of are entitled to international registration authority for orchids granted by Royal Horticultural Society.
13.Tea Research Institute
The institute focuses on the research of tea germplasm resources, genetic breeding, ecological cultivation, tea processing, chemical quality, quality standards and safety, the herbal tea of Guangdong, the collection and utilization of tea germplasm resources, etc. It has established the South China Branch of Tea Germplasm Nursery of Tea Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Guangdong Tea Germplasm Nursery, and the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Tea Resource innovation and Utilization. The institute has developed the first continuous mechanical processing line for congou black tea in China and the processing line has been applied to actual production.
The center is engaged in research on agro-product quality & safety standard and evaluation technology, and undertakes work such as monitoring, safety evaluation, technical training and training services with respect to agro-products, input in agriculture and agricultural biological environment. As one of the first batch of national standard validation units of the determination of food pesticide residues certified by the Ministry of Agriculture, the pesticide residue registration and test agency designated by the Ministry of Agriculture and the "three products and one indication'' (pollution-free agricultural products, green food, organic food, agricultural GIs) detection agency designated by the Ministry of Agriculture, it has established the Supervision and Testing Center for Vegetable and Fruits Quality, Ministry of Agriculture(Guangzhou), Key Laboratory of Testing and Evaluation for Agro-product Safety and Quality, Ministry of Agriculture and Laboratory of Quality, and the Safety Risk Assessment for Agro-product (Guangzhou), Ministry of Agriculture.
The center is engaged in basic and applied research of agro-biological resources, such as agro-biological omics research, preservation and innovative application of agricultural germplasm resources, improvement of genetically engineered agricultural products and establishment of a shared bioinformatics system.
